Mitsubishi Outlander in detail:

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander petrol SUV has been designed and engineered to stand out in the competitive SUV segment. Adorned with the striking and defined ‘Dynamic Shield’ front styling concept, this SUV comfortably seats 7 people with plenty of leg room and has the versatility you come to expect from a modern SUV. The refined driving experience, combined with Mitsubishi’s reliability and safety standards mean this new SUV is able to cope perfectly with modern life.

Bold Design

The Mitsubishi Outlander looks assured, imposing and impressive with LED headlamps, a sleek radiator grille and front bumper. Daytime running lights give the vehicle added road presence and its 18-inch alloy wheel design completes the look.

Moving to the side of the vehicle, lower side cladding, a raised beltline, strong muscular wheel arches and soft contorted bumpers offer a reassuring sense of safety and strength for the occupants whilst retaining the dynamic feel.

The same applies to the rear where horizontal trim between the rear side lamps add visual width, giving the car a distinctive planted stance. LED rear lamps and a shark-fin antenna complete the look.

New for the 2020 model is the addition of a Red Diamond paint option. Amongst other steps, a semi-transparent red coating incorporating mica flakes is applied over several other layers before being itself covered by a final clear coating. This process involves a succession of two baking stages while specially-developed programs ensure a high quality finish.

Driving Dynamics:

The Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by Mitsubishi Motors 2.0-litre 16-valve 4-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine and produces 150ps at 6,000 RPM, the engine is mated to a CVT automatic gearbox. The new Outlander benefits from the latest developments in Mitsubishi’s renowned four-wheel drive technology, with the inclusion of an on-demand system. This arrangement improves stability, traction and combines the electronic coupling and the 4WD ECU that controls it for optimal performance in all conditions.

The system comprises of three driving modes, ‘4WD Eco’, ‘4WD Auto’ and ‘4WD Lock’.

Most of the time ‘4WD Eco’ mode powers the car through the two front wheels, but when road conditions demand it, the system intelligently transmits the driving force to the rear wheels as well – providing a higher level of active safety while managing better fuel economy and lower emissions than the full-time ‘4WD Auto’ mode.

In term of ergonomics, all modes are selected using a push-type switch conveniently located on the centre console.

4WD System Driving Modes:

4WD Eco – The high-efficiency mode ordinarily just powers the front wheels, but when the wheels lose traction, 4WD engages.

4WD Auto – This is the normal mode and gives an excellent off-road performance in various conditions.

4WD Lock – High traction mode for the most demanding environments.

Further enhancements to the driving dynamics have been accomplished with recent developments in structural rigidity. Structural adhesive welding has been applied between body panels, to improve the steering stability and rigidity. These techniques were developed originally for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and have subsequently been used on the recent Eclipse Cross, and Outlander PHEV. Enhancements to the front and shock absorbers have also been made to increase the damping force at low speed and provide a smoother ride.

Luxurious interiors:

The Mitsubishi Outlander benefits from an elevated driving position and an ergonomic and practical dashboard layout that provides clarity and ease of use. The leather steering wheel has a grip shape added at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions, silver stitch and a gloss black and chrome accent.  An electronic handbrake is positioned on the center console along with the 4WD mode selector and switches for the heated front seats.

Adding to the comfort of the interior, the convenience-enhancing Smartphone Link Display Audio infotainment system is standard on all variants. Now with a larger 8-inch screen, the system supports Apple CarPlay*1, the smarter, safer way to use an iPhone*1 in the car. The driver can use Siri*1 or the SDA’s 8-inch touch screen to get directions optimised for traffic conditions, make and receive calls, access text messages and listen to music, all in a way that allows them to stay focused on the road. SDA also supports the Android AutoTM*2 which provides voice controlled operation of Google MapsTM,*2 Google PlayTM*2 music and other apps. TomTom navigation is also now built-in on ‘Exceed’ versions, allowing for navigation and mapping without the requirement of a Smartphone.

The second row of seating has a flip-up cushion and folding backrest, allowing for a 1.7m long floor when the second and third row of seats are folded down. Meanwhile the second row seats also feature a slide function allowing ease of use access for the rearmost passengers in the third row.

The third-row occupants benefit from a comfortable environment with superior sprung seats, and also have a simple ‘fold&stow’ operation with a 50-50 split function to aid practicality.

Enhanced Safety:

The Mitsubishi Outlander benefits from the latest in MMC safety technology, its advanced features working to protect occupants, other road users and pedestrians, both in determining the risk of an impending accident and in the event of a collision.

The SUV has a comprehensive passive safety architecture based on Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution)** impact safety body and seven SRS airbag arrangement. This includes airbags fitted in front driver and passenger, side and side curtain areas.

  • Blind Spot Warning (BSW) BSW uses ultrasound sensors located in the rear bumper to detect vehicles near the rear quarters. BSW alerts the driver through an illuminated symbol in the driver’s mirror and via an audible alert (activated when the indicator is in use) when a vehicle is in the driver’s blind spot.

  • 360 Degree Camera employs four cameras at the front, rear and in the side door mirrors to display a bird’s eye view of the perimeter of the vehicle, which is displayed in the Outlander’s 8-inch colour touch screen. A guideline overlay also assists the driver when reversing.

Other features include Brake Assist (BA) Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Mitsubishi-Active Stability & Traction Control (M-ASTC)
