MITSUBISHI MOTORS IN THE UK MASTER TECHNICIAN WINS A PLACE IN THE MANUFACTURER'S GLOBAL TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR CONTEST

  • Mitsubishi Motors in the UK Master Technician Alan Williamson qualifies for the Mitsubishi Motors Global Technician of the Year contest
  • Park’s Ayr Mitsubishi Master Technician to compete at the manufacturer’s HQ in Tokyo after third place finish in the European competition

The reigning Mitsubishi Motors in the UK Master Technician of the Year is set to go head to head with the best Mitsubishi Motors Technicians in the world after eclipsing his European colleagues in an international competition organised by the manufacturer.

Alan Williamson of Park’s Ayr Mitsubishi will travel to Mitsubishi Motors’ Tokyo headquarters in February 2021 to compete in the manufacturer’s Global Technician of the Year competition. He qualified for the prestigious event following his top three finish in the European Technician contest.

Competing against 17 other top Mitsubishi Motors technicians, with each one being recognised as the best in their respective countries, Alan finished third in the hard-fought contest. He earned his place in the European competition, which took place at Mitsubishi Motors Europe’s headquarters in the Netherlands, after winning the Mitsubishi Motors in the UK Master Technician of the Year title in December.

Alan, who lives in Glasgow, qualified for the global competition based on his performance in a series of five practical tasks. Each was designed to fully test Alan’s automotive knowledge and nearly 40 years of Mitsubishi experience.

Included in the tasks was the requirement to diagnose an installed fault with the hybrid drivetrain control system of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which entailed safe isolation of the 300 volt battery, prior to accurate diagnosis. The exercise perfectly demonstrated the breadth of the training that is delivered by the Mitsubishi Motors in the UK Training Academy to its technicians. The successful diagnosis and safe working practices is covered at the academy in conjunction with the IMI Level 3 training course in electric/hybrid vehicle system repair and replacement that is available to every MMUK technician.

Each task was completed against the clock with contestants only receiving a brief description of the fault’s symptoms, the limited details designed to replicate how a customer may attempt to explain an issue with their vehicle.

On achieving third place, Alan said: “The tasks were quite complex and the other technicians were very highly skilled, so I was really pleased to make the podium. It was a great experience and I’m really looking forward to Tokyo - it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go and I didn’t think I’d ever get the opportunity.”

Glyn Lewis, Technical Training Manager at Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, accompanied Alan on the trip. He added: “Alan can feel immensely proud of what he’s achieved. Taking part in the competition can be incredibly stressful, but it’s such a professional event and it’s great to be a part of. It’s something that our technicians can aspire to and, if they put the work in, it’s within the reach of anyone.”

Richard Weller, Director of Aftersales, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: “It’s a fantastic result for Alan and a great illustration of the extensive training that our technicians, and ultimately our customers, benefit from. We wish him all the best for the global competition, and he can travel to Tokyo knowing that everyone at Mitsubishi Motors in the UK and our entire dealer network is behind him.”
