neil goes the distance for mitsubishi

Think you’ve got a long commute? Well, it’s probably nothing compared with Neil Jacques’ journey to work . . .

He faces a 600-mile round trip every week from his home in Devon to Batchelors of Ripon, in North Yorkshire, where he is the Brand Manager at the Mitsubishi dealership – not that the long-distance driving fazes him, because he loves the job and brand so much!

‘I’ve been with Mitsubishi on and off since 1995. I like Mitsubishi and I like the way Mitsubishi works,’ he said. ‘You have a lot more of a personal relationship with the people at head office in Cirencester – they are all very approachable.’

Married with four grown-up children, Yorkshire-born Neil is now marking his 40th year in the industry – ‘man and boy!’ he jokes – having started as an apprentice mechanic and working his way up to his current key position via parts, service and sales.

He was at Batchelors of Ripon, in Dallamires Lane, for two years until 2013 when he and wife Sarah decided to move to the south-west of England after the showroom changed ownership. However, he was headhunted by Dealer Principal Tony Denton to return, and started back there again at the beginning of June this year.

‘I’m really happy to be part of the team again,’ said Neil. ‘It’s like being back in a pair of comfortable shoes.’

He works an 11-day fortnight – five days one week, six days the next – which is bookended each week by driving up to Ripon then back to Devon at 300 miles each time. ‘It’s a good job I like driving!’ he jokes, adding: ‘But seriously, if someone asked me to drive to Moscow tomorrow I’d go.’

It’s motorway most of the way for Neil, but what helps make the journey bearable is the fact that he does it in the comfortable, stylish and economical Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, using an Ecotricity swipe card to charge up the vehicle for free en route at service stations. Modern technology also helps Neil and Sarah cope with the lengthy time that they spend apart from each other. ‘Isn’t Skype wonderful?’ Neil comments.

Tony said: ‘It’s fabulous to have Neil back. His knowledge of the franchise, relationships and product knowledge is quite remarkable. Neil’s enthusiasm for the brand is what sets him aside from other candidates we looked at. His sales process encapsulates our company motto of “We’re TLC not PLC”.’

Outside of work, Neil, 56, is a qualified hockey umpire – ‘My little escapism from the job,’ as he puts it. Having enjoyed the sport so much as a player in his younger days, he decided that he wanted to give something back to it.

Neil said: ‘I’ve no regrets about my life in the motor industry. I’ve met some really interesting people and some absolute characters as well, and that’s why I love my job. Every day is different.’
